“I do not merely want to possess a faith; I want a faith that possesses me.” – Charles Kingsley

A life possessing faith is the call of Jesus to His followers. After reading Mark 8:34 and Philippians 2:5-7 in the amplified version, you may have a new and deeper understanding of this call:

“…If anyone intends to come after Me, let him deny himself – forget, ignore, disown, lose sight of himself and his own interests – and take up his cross, and (joining Me as a disciple and siding with My party) follow with Me – continually, (that is) cleave steadfastly to Me.” Mark 8:34

“Let this same attitude and purpose and humble mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus. – Let Him be your example of humility. Who, although being essentially one with God and in the form of God, did not think this equality with God was to be eagerly clung to or retained. But (on the contrary) emptied Himself – stripped Himself of the powers (that would not be consistent with His humanity) – so as to assume the guise and form of a servant (slave), in that He became like men and was born a human being.” Philippians 2:5-7

It is clear, after reading these passages, that Jesus both denied Himself and took on the role of a bondservant AND also calls us to the same – with Himself as our perfect example.

Being described as the servant of the Lord is the highest title a person can be given, not the lowest. It indicates a life lived to the fullest potential. It indicates a life possessing faith of strength, courage, and victory.
